I think you're right.

Read the owners manual in your spare time. All of it. The more you read, the more interesting it gets.

angiekay you're getting good advice from all answers and I'll add this:
Simply, if you don't know how to check your oil in less then 15 seconds after you open the hood. Or in other words with your eyes closed.
Then don't do anything except get it to a trusted mechanic for a diagnosis and estimate.

I’m thinking, doing is learning! If you are interested in learning, do turn the wrench! I’m sure AngieKay can check her HHR’s oil, I have confidence in her to be able to learn how to inspect that timing chain. I remember learning about engines and doing things, taking things apart and learning how to put them back together.
Many of us can open a hood , but you might not find the oil dipstick with your eyes closed!
