Hole in auto trans housing

Not mine..

Co-worker Harve wrenches on vehicles for extra cash. Has an '07 HHR sitting in his garage for repair of trans fluid leak from torque converter area.

Harve decided to pull engine vs. dropping the cradle to get to the converter seal area.

When he pulled the converter off the trans, he found a hole busted thru in the trans housing lower section. Roughly the size of quarter.
Broken bits seem to have fallen into the trans.

Any ideas on what would cause this?

Possible to patch hole, clean out the debris, and be ok?

Owner of HHR is on vacation and unavailable at the moment.

The best solution is to replace the transmission. In December I hit something in the middle of the road and knocked a hole in the transmission housing. That is what we decided to do.

Replace the housing or the whole transmission.

Harve's thinking the same, replace trans. Waiting to hear from owner.
Thought about tearing into trans to see what cause was, but doesn't want to put any time into it right now. Has other easier jobs he can do in the meantime.

I looked around on car-part.com for used trans for him. Prices aren't to bad, depending on year/mileage of unit.
