Carrier IQ has been being installed on smartphones for sometime. Apple has also been using it but with future updates will disable and remove carrier ID all together.

If your using any type of pre-paid toll device you can also be tracked. RF ID chips are another way to be tracked, they are showing up in credit cards and car keys as well.
