Thinking about a K&N #63-3069 high flow intake kit, intake tube, bulging box cover, etc. Buying used, cheap. Don’t know whether to rush to put it on or wait.

Didn’t find anything recent w/ admittedly lazy search. What’s the latest wisdom? I see mixed reviews. Will it really require a tune?

It is really just the elbow pipe that improves the airflow, depends on what the asking price is and the condition of the parts

 

Call K&N like I did and ask for a replacement pipe from air box to engine.
I my case it was air box to turbo.
They might ask you why.
Tell them you had a garage mishap and the pipe is damaged.
Once you have the pipe you might have to get different silicone pipe adapters.
I had to and found them cheap on Ebay
Use a stock GM air filter.
Make sure your cold air tube is good and you're all done.

Found installation instructions on line. It seems the K&N filter isn’t really any bigger that the stock version. I do like that it clamps on so presumably can’t slip off. Don’t see a huge value in the supposed economy of the cleanable reusable filter since it is claimed it can go up to 100,000 mile (!) between cleanings. Greener, I guess, but a trivial cost difference. In any event, looks like I can interchange the new filter and the original easily. I agree the main benefit is likely the intake tube.

 

Greener is debatable also. You have to wash that old oil out, it's gotta go somewhere.

If you're not careful re-oiling, you'll foul the MAF sensor...

 

I only oil mine in the incoming air side, just a spritz, then dab away any extra oil with a paper towel. Never had any issues with the K&N filter element , been using them since the 80’s .
