It's actually simpler than the and this does work on an 06 as well as other years.

Buy the proper blank key and have it cut to match the existing key(s).

1. insert your present key, start and shut off the engine.
2. remove key.
3. insert new key within 30 seconds and turn on the ignition.
4. wait 10 seconds, then start your engine.
Your new key is now programmed.

This is for keys only. Fobs must be programmed with a Tech2 (I thought everyone knew that by now!!)

Somehow this thread got all garbled up between KEYFOB learning and KEY learning! 2 completely different systems.

The fobs can also be repaired - I took mine to a battery store that re-soddered a broken switch connection for $12. It was a simple fix but it was so small I could hardly see it without their magnifying glass.

I have a 2007 hhr and the old remotes don't work anymore. I tried to solder them but still nothing. I have a new remote but I can't get it to program. I've tried the on/off, on/off and then hold both buttons on the remote but my car never goes into programming mode. Can anyone help?

You MUST have it programed by a GM dealer or a well equipped locksmith, it CANNOT be done by anyone that does not have a TechII scanner, with the possible exception of some locksmiths.

You can also try swapping the keypad from the new remote into the old remote and see if the old one now works with the new keypad.

If you have resoldered the battery cage properly, your problem may be worn out contacts on the keypad. Clean the contacts on the circuit board with alcohol or such when you swap in the new keypad.
