Those switches, because they don't get adjusted that often, do get flakey, and often just moving it back and forth will clear up the problem for a long long time.

I agree with the dimmer switch getting dirty. On my '06 the dash lights would go completely out sometimes.
I took the waterfall off so I could get to the control and gave it a blast of WD-40 and that has cured it for over two years now.
