locking gas cap for hhr?
ive tried most all that i can think of , has anyone come up with a solution for getting anything that can fit the hhr gas cap and lock so the door will close? the problem is the filler neck is set to high and most ive tried present the same problem, the door wont close , i know its hard to siphon as the there are supposed to be prevention screens in neck, but dumping stuff down is my worry , little jitterbugs that are jealous in nieghborhood are capable and have done so to others. Has someone come up w/ an answer to this problem?

" Has someone come up w/ an answer to this problem?"
I have two very large dogs..... ;) Seriously though, I haven't looked for one myself, but it seems a couple of guys on the forum have found one that worked, maybe they will chime in here. |
welcome to the Forum
:welcome3::welcome3::welcome3: Start a rumor about the large caliber hand gun you have and that story about the last fool that touched your car. |
Well...................... They still haven't found the body, so it's all good. :skull:

blameme4it, you didn't say what year/engine your hhr is, I think there was some discussion a while ago that seemed to indicate that the newer flexfuel vehicles *might* have had a slightly longer fuel neck, leaving less clearance to the door than the 2008 and older models. RockAuto shows a stant cap available that appears to have a pretty low profile. Either the part #10511 (in black) or the #10511Y (in flexfuel yellow). I think I googled "2010 hhr locking gas cap" or similar to find that. If I guessed the wrong year, you could always do a regular search on RockAuto to see what they recommend in order to help ensure correct application.
No affiliation, just liking the cap picture, which looks like it has a lower profile than some of the others I've seen. |
locking gas cap
I bought one for my 2006 2lt o"reillys part # 5903 about $16.00:thumb:

The Stant Cap is too High (part #10511 (in black) or the #10511Y (in flexfuel yellow). Get the 5903 for 08 or older HHRs, get the 5904 (yellow) for 09 and newer. Just got it from Auto Zone (CST Brand I think?). Fits perfect. Just follow the instructions on how to LOCK. You must use the key, unlike Stant that just clicks and locks. I tried the Stant myself-too high.

I think I got mine at Auto Zone. CST Cooling System Technologies #5903.

I had two of them first one froze and it took some work to get it off, the second kept setting off the check engine light because it wasn't sealing tight . was told by my dealer they are not needed The HHR has a screen in the nosel to prevent a syphen hose .

Does anyone know if the clearance is the same on the Cobalts? I'd want to get 2 and hopefully the part numbers will be the same. Filler probably is, but I'm not sure about the clearance between the cap and the door.

I had no problem with a Stant cap in my wifes 05 Cobalt-the Stant is higher than the CST Cap and no issues. Use either one.

locking gas caps a lot of them will open if you push down on them really hard even if they are locked.. i worked at a gas station here in Oregon and in Oregon you CAN'T pump your own gas... and people would always misplace the key and we had extra keys in our cash registered and most of them would open with the the keys that we would have

I live on Long Island in Nassau County-we can pump gas. I went into next door Suffolk County, got out of the car and an attendant asked what I was doing-turned out you can't pump your own. No biggie-price was actually less in Suffolk at the mandated full serve, than in Nassau's pump your own.
Found this snippet: All stations in New Jersey and Oregon, however, are mini service; attendants are required to pump gas because customers are barred by statutes in both states from pumping their own gas. Both states prohibited self service in the 1940s due to fears that foolish customers would handle gasoline improperly. Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality has also ordered a ban on self-service gasoline due to inexperienced pumpers being a significant source of groundwater and air pollution. Oregon's state fire marshal has also ordered a ban on self-service gasoline. Today, these states enforce the law because of the rapid increase of drive-offs, where people fill up their car and drive away without paying for gas. In 1982, Oregon voters rejected a ballot measure sponsored by the service station owners, which would have legalized self-service gas. |
Oh, isn't that silly... :duh: It ain't that hard, it's not rocket science!! It sounds a little "too controlling" for me. They're worried about "foolish customers" spraying gas all over the ground? Trust me, gasoline is so expensive nowadays that I'll make sure every drop gets in my tank. I personally don't like the idea of someone getting that close to and touching my car. I take extra care when removing the nozzle from my tank to make sure I don't drip or spill any gas on the paint and exterior of the vehicle. Someone else might not be quite as careful.
Note to self: don't be moving to Oregon anytime soon... |
Showing my age here: but I remember when full service was the norm....
gas, wash windshield, check the oil, & Sir, would you also like me to check the tire air pressures ? |
I remember "Gas pump jockey" was typically a gearhead's first job while still in high school.

wow brings back memories. I worked at a powertest pumped gas checked oil and tires full service meant we checked it all. The worse part was the so called gas shortage I had to have a police officer escort me to the last car yes odd even days were in place.the officer would have to stay with the car till it got to the pump so no one moved the last car sign to their vehicle.

I remember those days ;)
