I traded my 06 HHR LT today for a 2015 Hyundai Tucson plus some $$. I never had issues with the HHR (except for the dealers service dept. incompetence), and after 138,308 miles it was time for a change. Who ever ends up with the HHR should have a good car. I still have an overall average of 30.22 mpg for the 138,300 miles of my driving. The Tucson is probably the same size as the Equinox. A tight fit in my garage.

Another HHR leaves the family. Nice to hear that it was a good car for you.

My wife has a 2008 Hyundai Tucson. An earlier design than yours but hers has been trouble free for over 100k miles.

The Tucson has averaged 28.7 mpg (EPA rated 28 mpg) in the first 800 miles I have driven. It is taller than the HHR and I'd need a step ladder to clean the roof. Its electric power steering is rather dead with no feed back. I'm still trying to locate all the buttons/switches that control all the features that the car has. The switch locations are all over the dash, some hidden behind the telescoping/tilt steering wheel.

Its direct injection four cylinder engine seems quite peppy, even when driving with ECO mode on which just upshifts sooner (I guess). The car is in sixth gear at 45 mph, running at 1100 rpm. I haven't seen much difference driving around town with ECO on or off because I drive with a light foot anyway. I hope that this engine does not have any of the issues that GM's DI four had with the Equinox/Terrain.

My last tank of gas I had 300 miles of a lot of highway cruising and its DIC said 31.7 mpg, but hand calculation gave 30.3 mpg.

About the ECO mode on Hyundai/Kia vehicles: We've noticed with our Rio that there isn't a noticeable difference in MPG whether the ECO is on or off but the car runs better when it's off. With the ECO turned off, it's more responsive and doesn't labor the engine like the ECO does. Long trips, short trips, stop and go; it really doesn't seem to help the vehicle in any way, performance wise or economy wise. My conclusion after 8 months of ownership is that Hyundai/Kia's execution of the ECO mode falls way short of what other manufacturers have done. Leave it turned off(again: my opinion). I've also noticed that there's about a 1.5 mpg difference between the DIC and the actual math.

At 138k, the HHR has given you very good service. Only 45k on our 08 and happy with it so far. No reason to get rid of it yet. I can usually get at least 32mpg highway with it.


Our Kia Soul is the same way. Seems too schizophrenic with ECO on. Goofy shift points and not as responsive. I leave it turned off. I probably would not notice much difference mpg-wise; it's too easy to drive it like I stole it.

The Optima Turbo is a tempting acquisition. . . . . . . I test drove one and that turbo is smoooooth.

Not too much activity on a Hyundai forums, like almost dead. I did get a letter from Chevy about keys stuck in the ignition switch and extending the warranty on this issue for 15 years. That was the first repair on my HHR covered under warranty done in 06 or so.

Has the dealership sold your hhr yet.
