New HHR owner

I just bought a 09 HHR. I don't like the auto locks, or just 25 miles to the gallon. The engine is not all that smooth. Other than that, it's fun to drive. If someone wouldn't mind giving me a tip on how to stop the auto locks and get better gas mileage it would be appreciated.

You can reprogram the door locks in the Driver Information Center as explained in the owners manual, pg 3-56-3.59. If you don't have an owners manual you can download one here. Don't know what to tell you about the MPG.

Mpg

Due to its being tall and having relatively high drag, HHR mileage is particularly sensitive to driving speed. It takes a nosedive over 70 mph, and I've taken to driving 65 if I'm not in a rush to get somewhere. It takes only a little longer (and can be is safer) and the fuel cost savings is significant. There's a stretch of road which has a 45 MPH speed limit which I drive at 50 with cruise control in 5th gear (manual transmission) and get in the high 30s MPG when I do. Try driving slower with cruise control and see the difference.

The best I can tell is the door auto door locks can be set to engage either when car is put in gear or when ignition is turned. I didn't see any other options.

I know on my 09 LS 2.2 I get amazing mileage with 55 + Cruise Control, or when driving keep the RPMs about 1800 - 2000 .... Makes a big dif!

Welcome & enjoy the ride!

Don't know. I have an '09 with the 2.4L and usually get 29 to 32 mpg depending on how much highway I do that week. Last tank full I averaged 31.2.

Welcome to the forum......

I'm averaging around 30-32 also with a 2.4L in my '07. That's not "hyper-mileing" either, there's quite a few WOT blasts in there. Which engine do you have and what kind of fuel?
