Odd question.

I have a 2006 HHR LT 2.4L. My engine blew in my truck and I'm wanting to use my HHR to haul an engine back home. Only problem is, I don't have a hitch. What would you guys say the weight limit is for the cabin area? Is that a bad idea to put a V8 in an HHR??

I wouldn't. It's just a plastic shelf in the back, unless you remove the shelf and set it right on the spare tire, but then it doesn't seem like a V-8(on a pallet of some type, I would guess) would physically fit in the space. And then I'm not sure I would want to put that much strain on the tie-downs. The weight limit should be on your drivers door jamb(not on the door) On mine it's 943 pounds( cargo+driver and passengers).

Not to mention, how would you get it in and out of the back of the car?

Those plastic pallets like USPS uses will fit on the cargo deck, full size wooden pallets will not. The feet on the USPS pallets lift above the hinges. An experienced fork lift operator can load it.

I have hauled 600 lb. with not much problem.
