Odd trans issue

Last night I got in my 2009 2LT 2.4L put it in drive and nothing???? rolled back, gave it gas, nothing still? Put it into reverse, it kicked in and pulled as it should, shifted back into drive and it was fine, drove to the store and back no issues but still baffled me as to why it would not go into drive? I checked the shifter several times into park and back into drive but still didnt pull or feel it engage but elt it engage reverse, then it engaged drive just fine after engaging reverse... just wondering what could have caused that as I just drove it the night before to a friends house and back then did this yesterday. I havent checked today yet to see if it does the same but I will in a bit here... and as a side note it was in the 50s yesterday, so wasnt freezing

UPDATE: its 30 out and shifts fine. No codes.

I doubt it, havent had any issues with the car except this yesterday. I was parked on a slight upwards incline where Im normally on a level surface ....so wondering about trans fluid? It was checked at the shop 6 months ago and was full, no signs of any leaks or wetness anywhere...?

If it drains enough it'll take time to engage.

Low on fluid would be guess #1. Any spots on the driveway?

Mine was leaking slightly at the transmission pan gasket, all the way around it was red from transmission fluid, small dripping spots here and there.

No leaks, everything is dry under the hood, undercarriage and where its parked. It was checked at the shop when I got it several months ago and was told it was full ( I also made sure they knew what they were doing to check it ) havent had any issues except that one incident.... been fine since, just really odd. No codes popped up no any lights.....guess thats a good thing.

Double check the fuses and relays in the under hood fuse box and the TCM connector , make sure they are firmly pushed into their places

donbrew has a good suggestion... it could be the shift cable. Packard Electric who made our cables sometimes cut them too short. If one of your cable tie-downs between the dash and the trans have broken or become loose it may cause erratic gear choice. Chech the harness connector to the trans also.
