Poor in town MPG

I am very pleased with my HHR but may gas mileage in town is no where close to 23mpg. I only have 3700 miles on it with the 2.4L and auto tran. I just filled up today and only drove 20 miles all in town and the mileage is 16.2 mpg. I do not drive hard and notice on previous tanks the average (city and highway) driving mpg is around 21 mpg. I have gotten 32 mpg on the road but in town is not so good at this point. I am using 87 from Mobil or Shell and I don't think 91 will give me that much better mpg. Anyone else have these same results?

My fuel efficency is also on the lower end of the spectrum. Most of my drives are less than 5 miles w at least 2 traffic lights per mile. Even driving with a "light foot", my around town average is less than 19 MPG.

Those number's really suck. I am getting about 27.5 mpg in the city. I try not to stomp on the gas too often and I also don't come across too many traffic lights.
Campbell, if you're not driving hard than that 16mpg is really poor. Maybe there's some internal problems with the engine??? Many people on here have been saying they get mileage in the low 20's and that's with the car been driven hard.

Most of my driving at this point is short distances and my mileage went down to just over 28 mpg from 31 mpg when I was driving a combination of highway and city. I have the 2.4 with manual tranny. I've only got about 4200 miles on it right now.

I have a 2.2 with manual and it gets gret mileage in my opinion. Only has 954 miles but first week I had to go through the mountains to DC and averaged 32.3 mpg all highway...but the mountains take a lot aaway from the mileage. Now that I have been in the city driving exclusively my mpg overall is down to 27.6 mpg. So overall..I am extremely happy! Course the extra power of the 2.4 would be nice but with the manual...it is still plenty for the mountain climbs...and I get to cheat going down the moutains...NEUTRAL baby!

Nope, My 2.4 Liter Auto gets an avg. 21-23 mpg. in the city...With only 20 miles since your last fill up, traffic lights are bound to kill your DIC Fuel Econo mpg reading....it does mine if I hit heavy in town traffic and red lights.

I just filled up Monday night, I now have 54 miles on the Trip A meter and my Fuel Econ is reading 24.6, but on the other hand, I'm doing everything I can to miss red lights and I try to keep my mph around 40 so the tranny is in overdrive....that makes a big difference in the city....Now I have no problem getting my DIC to read 14 - 16 mpg if I run around town in I gear.......

Smile Fuel economy

I, too, own a HHR with the 2.4 and auto. I have never cracked the 23 mpg in the city. It's always been 21 or 22. On the highway, I was able to get to 28. I always have used premium and I have 3100 miles on it.

I guess another guestion for the group is, if you only doing city driving, what is you avg. mph on you dic. Mine this tank in town is 19 mph. The traffic signals really do cut into the mileage.
