Power Steering Failure and Air Bag followed by no power.
2007 HHR ls 2.2
Installed new motor, new alternator, new battery... Everything good for about 100 miles, then power steering warning came on, lost all power steering followed by air bag warning, then car just shuts off.. Pulled it over, acted dead, barely touched jumper cables to it and starts right up, for about 5 mins or less, the PS warning Airbag Warning then shuts off, have to wait for it to reset to even take out key. Where do I start looking?! |
Thought you were going to replace the motor back in 2014?
Sounds like an electrical problem so go back over all your connectors that were touched during the engine replacement, especially the alternator, starter and fuse box. At one time you were thinking of swapping the original 2.2 out for a 2.4. I gather you stuck with another 2.2 in the end? |
It has been a min since motor blew. Delayed replacing it due to having a baby and job loss. So finally did it this year. we did stick with a 2.2. Came from a cobalt with 140k miles. We will be looking over everything tomorrow. Was hoping someone had similar problem. I did see there was others with ps problem but car didn't shut off on them. Just became hard to steer. I'm thinking that would have been a more simple fix lol. |
Circumstances, circumstances! Well glad you are making progress on it now.
Hopefully some of the others will jump in with more suggestions. |
Yes as stated, wiring , grounds , connections all need to be double checked!
Also the fuse box halves are they tight and secure? |

Double check
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ffd69274a.jpeg The lug on the upper left is the power steering motor cable. Under the red cap on the lower left is the cable from the battery, then the cable down to the starter |
These are all things ill recheck. Now while I was researching, some in the many threads and google. I found a piece that talked about the under hood fuse box isnt always tighten down, comes loose and causes problems. To take out the screws and locktite them.. Anyone heard of this?

Yes, it's been known to happen, that's why OldBlue made a mention of it above.

if it isnt tight.. would it be smarter to take all the way off and apply dielectric grease then put top back on and re-tight? |
