Premium Gas??

Is it true that you have to put premium gas in the HHR?? My father really doesnt like that, if it does take premium, we wont get one. So does it?

If you have the 2.4 Chevy recomends 91 octane. If you have the 2.2 they recomend regular. I always use 93 octane no matter what the manufacturer says. ;) Why doesn't you dad like premium? If you love your vehicle it deserves the best! I'm sure the Bentley Continental GT you were looking at recomends premium. ;)

Although they (chevy) do recomend 91 octane they (Chevy) say you can still use 89. Myself personally, I run 91. If you purchase an HHR I would definitely recomend buying the 2.4L. The word on the street is that not many aftermarket companies are going to cater to the 2.2. Good luck!

It wasnt us looking at the Bentley, it was my aunt. Premium is more money. The savings would not be significant. He wants to save $$ on gas because his car gets 17 mpg, but if the gas is more on the HHR, you wont be saving much.

As mentioned above, Chevy does recomend premium. You could probably put mid grade (89 octane) and still be ok, as long as you don't get ping. It would truly be a shame to miss out on a great car becouse of premium gas.

Don't most gas stations only have 89 or 93 though? Not the 91....
Go with the 93

Not in my area. Almost every place has 87,89,91, and 93. Some smaller places might not carry one or another. There is a station up the street from me that doesn't have 93. Two of the Delta Sonics around here have 100 octane. :thumb:

lol how much is the 100 compared to 97. Gas is 2.01 here for 87. We don't even have 100 as an option anyplace i know of.

There is an octane sensor in the HHR's fuel system which the PCM uses to adjust engine timing.

I haven't found a reason yet to run the more expensive fuel in my 2.4L. I ran a few MPG tests using both 89 and 93 octane fuel and didn't see any difference at all. Both tests were on a 320 mile round trip, mostly highway crusing.

May be in the summertime the higher octane fuel will offer better performance, I'll have to wait and see...

I mainly use regular gas. Its cheaper and I AVG between 25 to 30 MPG driving to and from work.
