Reading OBD Codes
Reading OBD Codes
Hi Everyone,
I should pick up my used 2010 HHR on Monday.
You use to be able to read trouble codes on a GM vehicle
by pressing certain buttons on the air or radio panel.
You then pushed certain buttons to move through each module,
and you could even clear the codes. I was able to do this on a
2005 Cadillac and a 2003 Corvette.
The instructions on how to do this was in the Helm Service Manuals.
Is it no longer possible to do this or can someone with a service manual please post the "How To" instructions.
Thanks,
Bob

Welcome to the site.
No longer possible to do it the "old" way. You either need a code reader(scanner)
or if you have a smart phone, you can get wireless OBD plug and get an app that will allow you to read codes.
Most code readers and apps will read the regular codes but not any of the ABS codes.

to the forum Bob, and an early congrats on your new ride!George hit the nail on the head in post #2, the good old days are really gone for good.
One thing to add, most if not all, auto parts stores will pull OBD II trouble codes for free. With the exception of SRS, ABS, ESC, and TCM codes for liability reasons.
Thanks for the Welcome.
Not being able to read the codes on the dashboard is both good news and bad news.
The bad news is, I won't be able to have any fun.
The good news is, I won't have to buy a Helm's service manual for $200.00.
I had a hard time finding what I wanted in the HHR, which had to be a 2LT,
and either a '09 or '10 Aqua Blue Metallic or a '10 or '11 Crystal Red Metallic.
I'm thinking of buying either a Actron CP9575 Scanner or a CP9550 Reader.
If anyone has any advise on these, please let me know.
Thanks again,
Bob
