Wrap up thread

Finally had the weather, time, parts, and knowledge, to try this remote start project. Pushed the lock and panic buttons, and she started! I will order a new case for my fob, and I'm set. Thanks to all for the info.

cases on e-bay are about $10 incl shipping. You just have to get one with extra buttons, any GM late model should work, but you get 2 buttons that are useless.

Thanks for that. Was looking at designer types at newkeyfob.com for over twice the price. We will be getting a complete new fob also, with remote start of course. It's exciting to get this figured out before Winter actually ends.

FYI.
Your new FOB will need programming to the vehicle.

I didn't read what year your HHR is, but if it's a later model, you'll need to get the FOB programmed by a dealer or some locksmith who knows what he's doing. It took me two trips to the dealership and a little arguing to get mine programmed correctly.

2008 LT. I expected the trip to a dealer to program the new fob. Not in a big hurry with that.

Now I'm trying to figure out if the new shells come with a matching rubber keypad.

If you are going to get just the shell to put your old circuit board into, the answer is YES. If you have made the remote start work by holding lock&panic, then that is all you will need, just put the old circuit board into the new shell then forget about the 2 extra buttons. Remember you will need to lock (maybe twice) then start still. I would NOT bother with the "designer" options since I'll bet they also require "designer" receivers.

I bought a 4 button shell and rubber keypad, to replace the 3 button shell on my fob. Everything is working great, including the remote start. Cost was about $8.

Pushing the lock and panic buttons was fine, to determine if I had remote start. I had to have an actual remote start button.

One thing I had to learn, was that the lock button has to be pushed just before remote starting. This must be to prevent car theft, but the HHR cannot be taken out of Park anyway. I'm unsure of why they require this sequence.

My sediments exactly! Even if you never use it, if you got it it should be functional!
