Rock Chips - windshield???

Granted I drive 40+ x-way miles (each way) to work everyday but have had TWO stone chips in my windshield over the past 4 weeks!!!!

Anyone else experiencing this? I'm not sure if it's the quality of the OEM glass or the mounting angle... but this is getting rediculos!

The first chip... well- sounded like a boulder hit the glass (SMACK! ... it came from a gravel train truck), so although unwanted- it was warranted. The second- yesterday, however, came from a 4-door Pontiac Grand Prix!!! Literally sounded like a pebble hit the glass (ping!) ... and upon glancing over I noticed a dime-sized fracture in the glass (DAMN! )

Although a tinted sunstrip would be cool, I don't want to blow $200 for aftermarket glass unless it's stronger.

I had 2 small chips in the front windshield, and I noticed when putting on some rear decals that there are three deep lines in the rear glass. Looks like a rock was between the wiper and the glass. Not to happy about that.

Cool Epoxy

They make a chemical, not sure if it's epoxy, but it is used on the "bulleye" type dings. It took most of my ding out. Filled in the crack to prevent further crack/ @$12

Replace glass when you have to with PPG glass

You won't. The HHR glass is $565.

As mentioned, the GM glass is very soft, and the aftermarket PPG glass much harder and resistant to dings. The tint strip is an added plus. I would start budgeting for this now, unless your insurance offers glass replacement protection.

YEA... I'd have to pony-up $200 to meet the deductable for glass replacement and I have a phobia about making 'any' claim on my insurance (unless absolutely required) for fear they may use it against me down the road to jack-up my rates for no reason at all!!!
Not to mention... I'd MUCH RATHER drop $2-hundy on parts from SoCals!!!!

SCOOT I know what you are saying. I just had to have mine done last week. Lucky no out of pocket for me.
I went around for about a month with a chip a little smaller than a dime, then if started to crack. I would suggest you wait unless it is real big or you need to so you dont get a ticket.

It cost me $50 to have a windshield chip repaired at Windshield World. They injected epoxy into the chip and it is almost invisible. Better alternative than replacing the windshield since the chip had not started cracking yet. The guy who fixed it said he wouldn't install any glass produced by the manufacturer of the HHR windshield unless there was no alternative supplier available. He said it was inferior glass and not something he wanted to deal with. Told me to save my receipt and he would credit me with the $50 if I decided to replace the windshield later.
