Roof rack rail question

We have an 05 hhr with the standard chrome roof rack rails on it. We just want to throw our tent and a few other camping things that are in bags (camping cot & screen tent) up there to free up interior space. I'm not too concerned about the paint because it is so old and we are keeping her until she dies. Is it structurally ok to attach those items to the rails or do we need the cross rails for it? Thanks!

Metal is thin on these cars... Cross rails would be a good idea if you can find some.

A few lightweight items might be okay, but they get heavier with the down-force of the wind at speed. One of those, "sounds good on paper" ideas that may not work well in practice.

To be honest tough, I've never tried it.

05 model?

With what your talking about, probably would be ok, but expect some damage, scratches and possible denting. Cross bars are definitely the best way.

If you don't care much about looks a couple of 2X4s and tie downs will work nicely.

and if you care about the looks, paint the 2x4s with silver or aluminium paint. ;)

I have an 08 with the chrome side rails. I bought some Yakima cross bars and kayak stands. I've carried 2 kayaks hundreds of miles on it with no issues.
