Running Temp
 

My HHR is an "07 2LT. It commonly runs at 195 degrees F after warmup, which does not take long at all. I think it might have a 190 degree stat in it. This seems uncommon to my HHR friends around here, whose vehicle seem to run at about 180 or so. I have suffered no detrimental effects from this and, in fact, the fast warmup in winter is welcome. Your thoughts?

180 sounds a little low. 195 seems fine. Could go higher stopped or at low speed on a hot day, and counterintuitively, if you turn on the air, it's likely to drop. Dealer sez this is because the electric fan is always on with the air on, otherwise it only comes on if the temp goes up too far.

I have been through it too many times.

Just took a short drive, part in the city ( 0-30 mph, stop and go) and part highway (70). Coolant temp in my heated garage started out at 43 (outside temp is 6). I always drive under 25 or so until the blue "cold" light goes out. After about two miles the temp is 130, after four it is 190. From then on, it varied between 195 (highway) to 208 (parking right after getting off highway). Should I be investing in a water pump? Never been changed, 167k.

What is a blue "cold" light ? My HHR does not have any light like that.

Nor does mine. But we have the redesigned interior that came in 2008 for SS, and 2009 for LS/LT. Perhaps that is why we don't have the blue light special.

Times 2 what Donbrew and PulpFriction stated. - and Oldblue is right IF you change the thermostat it is imperative that you use the correct AC Delco 131-158! 180 degree thermostat.

But please note, a 190 deg thermostat does not mean that the engine will run at 190 Deg at all times, nor does a 180 deg thermostat mean that the engine will run at 180 at all times.
ALL that it means, is that the thermostat will open at that temperature. With any thermostat the temperature will vary due to a multitude of various causes and conditions. 185 - 190 - 195 - are all within specs. It is VERY unlikely that there is a 190 deg thermostat in your engine for those reasons.

You need to quit over-thinking it, and ask yourself: does it overheat? (no), does the fan run a whole lot? (no), does the temp exceed 220 or over frequently? (no).

Should you replace the water pump? Why? Sorry, as Donbrew alludes to, we have been over this a lot of times, and the outcome is always the same. With one member it was even suggested he stop watching the digital temperature gauge as he was totally fixated on it, and worried himself to the max..
