Have you checked if you are affected by the recall?

Other frequent problems are thing sitting on the passenger seat.

The TSB on the subject has to do with corroded connectors. The usual offender is on the passenger side kick panel area. https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/prob...g-light-43456/

You need a special scanner to read airbag codes, but they are there if the light is on, they can at least, give you a direction.

I would suggest starting with the kick panel air bag fuse. Pull it out and push it bag into place. That might solve your problem! Gregg once had completely dead gauges, still back-lit, and running fine. All I did was pull out and put back in the fuse for the gauge cluster and I haven't had a problem for the past year! The fuse boxes on the HHR are prone to rockin around.

Those connector and wires are right where rain infiltrates.

You may have heard about the problem with Ford pick up trucks. The SDM (airbag module) was mounted on the floor under the driver seat. Keeping in mind that the majority of those trucks were construction vehicles, with the driver getting in and out in rain and mud. The carpet under the driver seat reatains all of that and the connector gets corroded and the SDM shorts out.
