Sunroof problem

Maybe Chevymgr could help with this, or if anyone else has had this problem. Whenever I close my sunroof it will stop with about an inch to go and open back up. I have to press the close button again really quick when it starts reopening sometimes I only have to hit it once other times I have to hit it up to 5 times but if I’m lucky it will close the first time. My car will be out of warranty toward the end of March so I would like to try to get this fixed so it don't get stuck open after it expires and have to pay out of pocket. I have had the dealer look at it a couple times and they just lubricated it and that does not fix it, the sunroof is kind of random when doing this so it may have worked properly when they tried it but not when I tried it later. They showed me that if the glass hits something it will reopen. Could it be possible that the windscreen may not go down properly and cause the sunroof to think there is a something in the way? If so how could that be fixed? Now with the cold weather coming up I will get to see if they finally got that front end noise fixed too.

You need a new sunroof assembly.

Thanks for the quick reply, I knew there had to be something more to it than lubricating it.

Hey NSS, I had the same problem with my sunroof about 2 years ago. It was a problem that would only happen every now and then.

The service department changed out the switches and the sunroof assembly on mine and everything has worked fine since. It had never opened up again since the repair (until last week when it happened again, but only once and it has not happened since. It might have been something small in the track that time???)

Thanks calgary, between what you and Chevymgr said it sounds like that is what I will need to tell them to check out and replace. Now once I can verify whether or not the cold weather clunk was fixed earlier this year i will set up an appointment to get it fixed. I have to go to the dealer tomorrow so I will probably give them a heads up on the situation.

I mentioned this to my dealer the other day, and they did nothing. I was told that this is just due to an over sensitive sensor causing it to reopen thinking there was something in the way. It was said that he had seen this in an 09 and even in a Cadillac, and Gm had no bullitens out so they couldn't fix it. I know this is no more than a nuisance but my concern is just that after the warranty is up that it will not close and I will be stuck paying for a fix. If it is detecting resistance I would have to say that it would be from the windscreen because it is at that point it reopens so why they wouldn't try a new assembly I don't know. I have to get the car in to have that cold weather clunk checked out again before that warranty is up so I'm thinking I may have to try another dealer and at least see what they think about it, which will be a pain since my dealer is only 1 mile from my house at least there is one near where I work.

The Cadillac makes sense as the assmbly for the sun roof in the HHR is lifted from the older CTS caddy.

nss79,

If you haven't talked to the service manager, it is time to do it. This is not a normal operating feature for the sunroof and there are no servicable parts when it comes to this type of repair. Replacement of the assembly is the only fix. Tell him you will score the CSI survey Compeletly Satisfied, which should open his eyes. If he won't help, go to the General Manager.

Thanks, I think I am going to try the dealer by my work and see what they say. I thought it would be easy for my dealer to do since the headliner was already down as they were installing my GM XM kit (I had already purchased)which was interesting itself, the book said it took 1.5 hrs and got a call from them saying that it took longer so they needed it an extra day and should have been a $400 job just to install it. I was still charged the original quote though, at the higher price I can say it most likely would have been done elsewhere. I also have another problem that only pops up when it is cold outside and they have already tried to fix it 3 or 4 times over the past 2 winters and it is still there, but in their defense the weather always seemed to start to warm up when they had it so it could be thought that it was gone. I mentioned to 2 service people that I was told that a new assembly was probably needed, I am not sure if they just thought I didn't know what I was talking about or that I was telling them how to do their job. What I do know is that it still does it and I don't even think that they looked at it since it was not on my receipt anywhere to show that something was done or they just lubed it up again which does nothing. Thanks again, hopefully I will have some better news soon.

Well had it in to the dealer by my work and had a much different result. The front end noise seems to be gone, they replaced the steering column as per the TSB and I did not notice it on the way home. I had it into my dealer about 3-4 times to try to get this fixed, now I just have to see after a couple days of driving if it is gone. The sunroof they tried to reprogram but the car wouldn't take the program. I have another appointment to take it back in so they can pull the headliner and take a look and order the parts if they need to. It looks like this will finally be fixed.
