I usually get between 20 - 24 around town, as high as 34 on the highway. Maybe you have a mechanical problem that you don't know about.

I usually average 30 on my 2.4, and that's usually on hilly country highways going between 65 and 80 MPH. Around town driving is never economical unless you have a hybrid and it's running on battery.

We've had our HHR for about a year and a half now and we've never bothered to figure out the gas mileage. It's 99% around town driving we do, so I figure we get what we get! (And that's all that we get!!)

I just picked up a 2006 LT1 with a 5 speed in it a couple of weeks ago. It only had 5300 miles on it. I always check the actual MPG when I fill the tank... so far... 26.7 % 27.7 MPG's on the first two tankfuls. My DIC tells me that my average speed is 33 MPH and that the mileage is hovering around 27.1 MPG.

For what it's worth... I've driven single axel tractor trailers for 25 years and have always lugged the engine instead of winding it out. I shift the HHR at the 2000 RPM range unless I'm feeling frisky and want to have a more fun feel.

The one grip I have is that in 5th gear... the RPM's are at 3000 when I'm cruising the highway at 70 MPH. My last car was an 02 Taurus wagon and the RPM's where around 2200 at the same speed. With that car I did 20-21 MPG consistently. It would be the cat's (you know what) if my little HHR had a 6 speed in it!

All in all... I'm saving about $55.00 a month in gas with my new ride!

Maybe i do have some problem. I honestly drive like an old lady. I drive about half local and half on the expressway. I only have about 1900 miles and the dealer advised that if i want i can have the service department check it. I guess i will drop it off when i have to do my oil change for them to check it. It is very hard for me to be hours without a car.

Gas Mileage

Hi isaacm66,
We just got back from a road trip to TX ... the HHR only had around 1000 miles on it when we left KC & we got about what you were getting, we were really bummed out by it... So today when my husband went to pick up our touch up paint from the dealer he asked.. & our sales guy told us that believe it or not... after a couple of oil changes (i.e.) more miles... the gas mileage should definitely go up.. he said that is how it is with new cars, he has had other people with the same problem & it does get better (he says)... I guess only time will tell. Hopefully that' is the case for you & I.
Oh, We were also easy on the gas pedal & kept it around 70 -75mph on the Hwy & from TX to MO it's not very hilly
Best of luck, If you come up with something else, I would love to hear about it.

I'm 55 miles from the dealership where I bought my HHR...driving back today about 75 % highway I avg 30.6 mpg according to the DIC...I'm pretty happy with that considering only 300 miles on car! Hit 80 mph a couple of times(by accident...smooth running 4 banger!)

mpg should go up with more miles on the car as the engine breaks in...has been that way on every car I have owned

Goose, your car sat around for like 8 months on a car lot somewhere? Do you have flat spots on the tires? JK :)
