Top Speed?

So I have an 06 HHR LT with the 2.4L.....second owner bought it in 07 with about 4k miles on it....but this is what I want to know, if some kind of tune or programmer has been put on it before me. I've read a lot about the top speed being 107 or 110 sometimes....but with mine, it'll go about 110 and quit, but if I let off for a second and then floor it again, it will pass 110. It gets up to 120 and is still pulling..I was curious to how fast I was going and I used my speedometer app on my phone and it said I was going 123 before I ran out of road. I want to get on a long long stretch road and see what it will really stop at. But is this normal? Or a tune or something?

:welcome8: to the forum Mcw032391!

Its possible that the first owner either chipped it or had it "tuned" via a programmer, the only way you'd be able to tell for sure is to have it re-flashed back to "stock" by your dealer or maybe see if a Scan Tool finds something that's not normal.

Unless you have an SS, or a heavily modified HHR, the top end seems to float between 110-115mph before the limiter cuts in. As to how accurate your cell phone app is versus a true road speed, that would depend on whether its coupled to a GPS application.

i have a 2010 2.4 and i got it up to 116 and i ran out of road too.

Buried the speedometer! ... Buried the tachometer!... Buried the blown engine!

***Overreving at high speeds can be costly!

Well, like I said, it does stop at like 110, and it's like it just gives up! But if I let off then stomp it again, it's almost like it overrides the limiter or something and drives right on past 110! Another thing, after I do this, my cruise control doesn't work anymore, until I turn the car off then back on....strange right? And when I do use my cruise and use the accel button, it literally stomps it, no matter what speed I start accelerating at, it floors it. This normal also? Lol

That's normal about the stomping when hitting the acceleration button, my 06 did that. I found it weird also.

The 2.2 and 2.4 top speeds aren't high. Our engines work alot harder, don't want to blow the engine.

I only have the 2.2. I ran it up to about 105 just to see how stable it was with my springs and sway bar. But its no race car. Just be careful how much you run it that hard. $$$$$.
I will say that with the springs and sway bar its very stable. Drives better at that speed then our Mazda 3 does.

The "stomping" effect is a function of the cruise control's algorithm used to regain speed when "resume" is pressed. It can be very aggressive at times, which is why its best to accelerate with the throttle to your set speed before re-engaging the cruise, otherwise it will go a bit "mental" and bounce off the red line.

Speed limiter or not, a top speed of 100+ is really quite good. Remember when cars in the mid '70s into the 80's with V-8s would struggle to hit 90? I remember a '79 Buick Electra with a 350 4bbl V-8 would hit 60 fairly quickly but had a hard time pegging it's 85 mph speedometer. Sad
