Towing restrictions?

Just read on another forum that GM says no towing if you have a 5speed. Even the Cobalt has the same restriction. The automatics are ok up to 1000 lbs. What is GM so concerned about with the manuals?

Even with trucks the auto. can tow more then stick. I would think because of the clutch springs arn't strong enough and having to riding the clutch to pull out.

Mostly, they are concerned with the clutch. With the automatic being electronically controlled, they can program the controller to protect the transmission from the driver doing something bad. The longevity of the clutch is directly related to shifting techniques. If you slip it too much or ride the clutch, towing will burn it up quick. Then some drivers will go to GM and get mad because their HHR has a crappy transmission that failed. It's easier for GM to just say don't tow with the manual than to try and educate all the manual drivers on proper technique.
