TPMS Rebuild kit needed or not?

I have been looking at new tires to make my wife happy and when i was just doing a setup on discounttire.com and one thing it added on was the TPMS rebuild kit for $40.

Is this needed or can they remove everything from my new tires? The description they gave didn't help too much it just said that they basically can get old and need to be replaced. However i only have 19k on the tires and just need to know if this is required or if it an be transfered.

Also, side question, if i bought tires at like tirerack, then what do you do? go somewhere and have them installed? How much does that run on average? I would love to save as much money as i could. On the test run on discount tired with some triple treds, installation, rebuild kit, all the other BS fees, and tax, it was $825... which is way too much. I know i can prob get a better deal going in, but this was just a dry run to check prices.

thanks

You don't need the kit. I recently bought a set of tires from discount tire for my 08 and did not have them put the kit on. If you find tires you like for a good price elsewhere, take proof of the price to discount tire and they will match it(with shipping included). A simple printout of the price with shipping that you found should do it. That way you don't have to deal with waiting for the tires and finding someone willing to install them. I found even better prices at treadepot.com than at tire rack, and discount tire matched those prices for me.

thanks.

so they were able to take whatever they needed out of your old tires or are you saying you just aren't using the TPMS anymore?

They re-use your existing TPMS parts.

TPMS Sensors

The sensors are mounted in the rims, held in place by a torx screw in the valve stem. They have a 2032 watch battery in them that should last 4 years or longer. They (battery) are sealed inside and can NOT be replaced. (How wonderful)

SOME tire dealers like to see if you know what they are so they can sell you something you really do not need. (Yes I said SOME)

Only original mounted in '08 HHR fwd to '10

Its just another scam designed by Discount Tire to get your money. You don't need a new kit even though they say its a requirement. Plenty other tire places out there to buy tires from other than Discount Tire that won't lie to you and try to sell you junk you don't need.

it's not as much as them lying, like i said i was just throwing a few thing in the cart and it popped up saying that you might need it. i wanted to make sure i didn't before i say no i don't want that and then miss a part of the equipment i need.

Could they possibly be cheaper on the bottom line than Costco? After install, rotate, balance, road hazard and no shipping?
Not shilling for the CostCompany, just wondering.

You can get the same tires from Costco at a much better price and not have to listen to all the BS sales pitch.

no costco and no membership. i have a sams but they don't have triple treds or that big of a selection at all.
