I will say that I did try the 3M tap splicers , red ones came with resistors for LED lights, those cut right through the tiny wee flimsy wires. I don’t recommend them at all

These little thingys, called Scotchloks , great idea, the blue ones are to big for the HHR’s thin wires, the red ones are to small.
Ive used these and had wires break or they fail to make contact... for toys and whatever cool... but I wont use those splices on cars at all.

When I installed my wiring kit it was just 1 hole for a ground screw, unplug the harness and install a "T" and plug it back together. I store my plug under the floor panel and pull it out when I need it and just run it out the hatch. I think I installed it in 11 and I have had no problems using it that way.

Why drill for a ground that close to the battery and 2 other ground points for the lights?

Because the plug and play harness has the ground terminal in the drivers side tail light area. It’s in #4 of the instructions

Id rather use the plug n play for a clean install, lack of damaging existing wiring and look factory ( although they don't come factory ) with the plug bracket mounted at the hitch no need to dig out the plug risking damage if it gets hung up on something. Like the others, I feed the plug through a rubber drain plug add some silicone sealant to keep water out, maybe a couple plasti-ties if needed and done. Im just looking to pull a small 5x8 trailer for the mower, debating to get an enclosed trailer to maybe even keep it stored in out of the weather with all the lawn care stuff to free up the garage floor space. Brand new $1750 5x8 with rear ramp door and side RV door..

Just remember that the HHR recommended trailer tow weight is only 1000 lbs.
From the owners manual:
Weight of the Trailer
It should never weigh more than 1,000lbs (450kg). But even that can be too heavy.
Maximum trailer weight is calculated assuming only the driver is in the tow vehicle and it has all the required trailering equipment. The weight of additional optional equipment, passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle must be subtracted from the maximum trailer weight.
