Useless functions: oil life indicator
Oil Life Information
The GM Oil Life System is an exclusive, computer-based process that calculates the percentage of oil life remaining in your vehicle, based on a number of different factors. These include:
* Engine type and temperature
* Driving conditions
* Ambient air conditions
* Specific engine characteristics
How do we predict when you'll need your next oil change?
Remember, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and be sure to reset your vehicle's Oil Life Indicator after each oil change.
See the status alerts below to better understand what oil life percentage range each symbol represents.

I know that everything about our famed HHR is great and they can do no wrong but...lets use this thread to help GM weed out the rarely used or practically useless functions. For example:
The oil life indicator on the DIC. I got an oil change the other day and I promptly remember to reset the oil life on the DIC. THen it dawned on me: what kind of indicator is it if I have to reset it myself? THere isn't any sensor to really detect whether or not my oil needs changing...just this thingy that counts down according to....miles? If I don't reset it whenver I get the oil changed...it doesn't serve any purpose in terms of when I need to get it changed. Unless there is some kind of underlying purpose, this thing is worthless...most people ignore it and get it changed every 3000 anyway
