Many if not most modern cars are set up that way. My 2005 GTO only has one keyhole (driver's door), as does the new Mustang, the new Challenger, and the new Camaro to name a few.

The reason the donut is required to go in the back is because of the size difference. A few people just through it on and drive a couple months on it before they decide to replace it. It can cause damage to the transaxle with the smaller donut rotating alot faster than the regular wheel/tire. It should fit on all models besides one's with Brembos. It may also through off the speed sensor.

Worst design error: Cupholders. The location flat out sucks.

Honestly, the only "error" I've found, design-wise that is, is the placement of the window switches on pre-2009 models, which they fixed. Otherwise, though some things may seem a bit inconvenient, I don't see them as flaws, as they tend to be a matter of preference or opinion.

I agree that the cup-holders are terrible. Especially when both driver and front seat passenger have the armrests down.

Definitely a preference. I actually liked them located in the center. Also knowing that the passenger could control operation of all windows. Helps when traveling w/ the dogs. When I get back in the market, I will be looking for one w/ the switches in the original place. Preferably a 2006 DBM.

One day (while my remote battery was dead), I attempted to unlock the car manually when the lock knob only rose halfway. I had to call the GM service, who rather than use Onstar to unlock my door ( i had let it lapse) decided to send out a locksmith. He put an air bag in the top of the door, springing it open enough to get a coat-hangar like tool in. Although it was impossible to pull the knob up, I was able to poke the rear door switch for my panel, and pop open the back door.
That's funny, I never even noticed there was no keyhole on the passenger side. I took to using only the remote when I found the lack on the back hatch.

Re: "the rear "fender flares" and the sandblasting effect yet. My poor 07 is down to bare metal in that area and don't have the $$$ for running boards & paint to fix."

We own an Envoy that has the fenders sand-blasted by traveling on the gravel roads in our area. When we bought the HHR, we insisted that it have the running boards. Then I added the OEM mudflaps. I don't want that unintended two tone paint job on this vehicle, and so far it's been working.

Mine has those 3M type clear protectors. They are embedded with debris and are turning yellow. Its horrible. Its my one MAIN complaint about this car cosmetically.

And are especially annoying, if its a five speed, where the driver needs lots of access into that small area for shifting.

My only complaints.. so far... has been echo'ed many times in the 14 pages
of the thread here. Door lock knobs being too tall , chimes for turning auto headlights
off or manually locking it and seat belt. i deliver news papers with my hhr mostly night driving.
but i am loving the gas mileage from my 2.4 engine.

While reading this thread have learned a few.. things.. to try that may help in the future
to combat. the problem. . . thanks everyone ~
