What would i need to get to 215 hp, I have the 2.4 engine?
Hotrodbob.....
You have mentioned this Ecotec performance book many times. It has my interest. Does it mention "builds" and available equipment for the 2.4?? I have noticed everything that GM builds for display and promotion (Bonneville, etc.) is the 2.2 or the 2.0. Has me wondering why those engines, if there is available gear for the 2.4.

Hi guys
I'm new to this board and am still shopping for an HHR . Have been reading but no posts till now. Is this true about the 2.2 vers 2.4 ? I was looking to get a 2.4 auto but if there are more mods for the 2.2 then maybe I will have to rethink my plan .

Hi StormT,
From another Canadian, welcome to the site.
Are thinking of buying used or new?
What would 215 HP get you? Even the SS is only a 15 sec QTR Mile car at less then 100MPH."Economy" cars are not supposed to be fast.Just buy a maclaren f1 which stock does the quarter mile in about 11 seconds, its the fastest accelerating car, and the the highest top speed production car in the world.
Oh for the says of the mid 13 second real of the line stock muscle cars. Like
the 71 390HP Barracuda, 69 Lowly 375HP Dodge Dart,
Heck even the 1970 BUICK GS had 360 HP and reached QTR mile times of 13.38 at 105 MPH a friggin Buick!!! And that was some heavy metal....
as were all the real muscle cars except the vettes. Ever see a 69 Roadrunner? THAT beast is the THIRD all time fastest muscle car at 12.91/112MPH!!!
These were factory. This is where the old time "tuners" started!!!
I guess thats why some people my age scoff at the "tuners" today trying to squeeze 13 sec QTR miles out of 4 cylinders where in a 2.4 one needs a an aluminum head, ported, Eagle rods, J&E pistons, Crane roller cams, Crane valvesprings, SBI rocker arms, Zzapp Motorsports 60mm throttle body, Screaming Demon coil pack. Just to make an otherwise LIGHT car perform like the old heavy metal on the showroom floors that did not sound like flatulent old men off the line
I personally would not touch today's SS anything, They are all wannabes to those who had the real thing, Kinda like eating hamburger after enjoying a nice steak for so long, The fuel economy is the only real benefit and even that is not so grand in an overly tuned 4 cyl.
All in all the HHR SS is equivalent to the 50th fastest stock American production car made; the 1964 271 HP 289ci V8 COBRA. Not bad company and not bad for a 4cyl motor at all. I would say go for the SS if HP is important or
Enjoy your economy car for what it is. Not what it's not or ever could be,

BTW, Bill Hahn's pulled 400 reliable horses out of a 2.4 Ecotec with no internal modifications. That's out of an engine that has half the cylinders and less than half the displacement of the old Hemi elephants.
As for the 2.2 having more parts, that's a given considering the 2.4 has only been around for a couple of years. More and more parts are coming available every month, and Hahn does have a turbo kit for the 2.4 Cobalt and G5. I'm sure if you take your car to him or any other tuner worth the money, they'd be happy to do whatever mods you need to get up to or surpass 215 HP.

I'm gonna have to get this book back, because I really don't remember now. I got the book a couple of years ago and since at that time I never thought about having a car with this engine I gave it to a friend.
I do remember basics like part numbers, suppliers, how to info and HP readings up to 1100HP. I have tried to find it since on at a book store or on line and I can't. The compact racers are familar with it as the few I've spoken with have used the info. It came out when the Cobalt hit the streets so GM could get serious in NHRA, SCCA and B'Ville racing.
I'll go to the guy I gave it to and beg to get it back and try and post the part number.
Could this be what you're talking about ?
