On mine that chrome piece was definately replaced. Wonder if they sometimes damage the old one removing it and have to replace it, only if its damaged.

Since the recall the new key is a little hard to insert to start I will wait awhile and may have to go back to the dealer.

Ignition recall may have come at the right time for me.
I have not had the recall done yet. My ignition could not be turned back without using the key itself so I figured I would wait until a good majority were completed already.
This morning when I went to start my car after work, my ignition needed a little bit of coaxing to get it to turn. Just before it was willing to turn the key pushed out about 1/4" and then it turned freely. Once it was running I pushed the key in and then pulled on it. To my surprise the key was able to come completely out of the ignition. At that point I moved the key in and out of the ignition multiple times with the car still running. I turned it off hoping that it was a fluke and would correct itself after a couple cycles but it did not. I am going to try my old key and see if there is a difference but I expect it will still be able to slide out as I suspect the part of the lock cylinder that holds the key in has broken.
Looks like I now have a new way to prevent the ignition from accidently turning off due to too much weight on the key ring lol. Also looks like I won't be waiting any longer.

Got mine done today, too. Jay Chevrolet in Highland, MI continues to get my highest marks. Everything was done as quoted, and I employed their free wi-fi. They ARE practically across the street from GM's Milford Proving Grounds, but I still want to give a brief shout-out to them, Professionalism. What else is there to add.

GM has had a problem with being able to remove the key from the ignition while running since the early 1970's. I would have thought they would have cured that problem by now.

I would think it more in the designs of ignition lock cylinders as I have had VW's and Nissan's have this issue before too. They were just older higher mileage cars when it started happening.

Called the dealer which said old key would not work, but it works great. Dealer asked to call me back. I got a call later and they said new key was in the box for return to GM.
I will drop by on Monday and they will reprogram the new key.

Well I swapped my newish key for the one that was much older (bought car used) before heading to work. The old key is not able to be pulled out of the ignition. I will have to try the newish one again when I get home in the morning.

New keys on mine are the same as the old ones, except of course for the opening in the key head. Haven't really noticed any material differences other than they feel like newly cut keys.
