09 SS w Performance Pkg - winter tires

Purchased 09 HHR with performance package (limited slip diff + Brembo brakes). Great little beastie, but maybe performance package was a mistake. Wanted the limited slip for winter, but no aftermarket wheels that fit huge front Brembo's, so can't put on winter wheel package. (Dealer quote for second set of stock rims - $2700!) Surfed sister forum (Cobalt SS) since they have had Brembo's longer. Same problem and much frustration. Tire Rack and Discount Tire both say they need to get vehicle in to take measurements to make recommendation. Anyone out there with same vehicle live close enough to drive over to either location and let them measure?

It may be a viable option to switch to smaller brakes from an 08 SS for winter operation. TCE may be able to give you good information on that. You may be able to find those brakes cheap if you get them from someone doing an upgrade. That will probably be cheaper than getting another set of stockers or going aftermarket on your wheels.

Oh, and if you want, I'll trade the brakes on my 08ss for your brembos.

Are you saying a cheap set of 18" rims wouldn't clear the brakes or are you looking at a smaller rim?

You will need 17" rims with brembos, 16" rims with reg. brake package. 16" will not go over the brembos.

You jest of course, but interestingly in frustration I did ask dealer about swapping for base SS brakes. Don't remember the quote exactly but it was huge. Not just the calipers, but the disk and hub would need to be changed. Also voids the warranty. In any case the Brembos seem to be good for bragging rights, and you can't have brakes that are too good, so hope to solve the rim problem instead.

I'm new to this forum, so thought "quick reply" was on a message basis. Last reply was to AaronSS. This one to others. Thanks to all.

To JeffS396 - thanks; I have an appointment at dealer to try one of these. (They have upped the price to $150 retail though and want a liability waiver to sell for different vehicle than intended)

To Canuck - yes would like more tire, less rim for winter driving. We get lots of frost heaving and potholes here. Maybe more than even your location given large swings in winter temperature.

To CokeyBill - thanks for all of the info and the great web site.

With no disrespect to you, and this is just my , but I sure wouldn't worry about what the dealer thinks is appropriate wheels for my HHR! It's pretty much black & white...they either clear the calipers or they don't! Rear fitment will NOT be an issue for sure, fronts can't say for sure...mine has standard brakes...plenty of clearance! Please don't pay that for these rims, they just sold you a $22K+ vehicle & want you to pay full retail for these???
Here's the latest from GMPartsDirect.com...

GM PART # 9597624
CATEGORY: Wheels
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $150.73
OUR PRICE: $92.49[/QUOTE]

Also, I have 225/50/17 Michelins on mine, actually the same tire that comes on your SS, only in 17" diameter. The diameter of this size is exactly the same as your 18" combo, but have the added benefit of a taller sidewall for your winter driving use.

If you visit this site:

http://www.car-part.com/

you can find one of these rims at a local salvage yard, just search under 2006 pontiac G6 with 17" steel rims. Go there & physically try one on the front, then you'll know for sure before you order. The tire rack is always a good source for closeout rims, you could always go aftermarket alloy 18" for probably less than $150/wheel! Good luck!
