1st Oil Change - Question?

Booked and went for my first oil change. Arrived for my 2:00 appointment a little early and left at 5:00. Three hours is insane, and I was waiting for it- lots of apologies for being backed up, but could have told me that when I arrived.

QUESTION - I didn't ask for synthetic oil, but it was a GM dealership so while I should have asked, I also really shouldn't have had to. But now I'm wondering anyone know the part number? My bill shows qty1 of 88862173 no description (brand or type) other than Oil. Tried doing a search on it but got nuttin.

Did you pay $25 or $75? [that is the rate for American changes I have seen posted here from dealers]

If you got Mobile one it will be a very high bill. If not you will see something in the $30 range or less.

With some dealers I would want to see them pour it in before I would feel safe. In fact I would want to see the unbroken seals on the bottles. LOL.

Just next time is you are able do it your self. There is no car easier than this one. to change the oil in. It will save you big $$$$ and not take 3 hours.

3 hours!!! Wow!!! That's a lot of time for something that took me 10 min. in my driveway last Friday.

LOL - $52 just about middle of the road, not cheap enough nor expensive enough for me to be absolutely sure but leaning towards synthetic. Then again, it's GM pricing. Would really like the confidence of knowing (interpreting the pn).

my gm dealer charges 29.95 for conventiional and 59.95 for synthetic. a mechanic told me that with the detergents in todays conventional oil that synthetic isnt nessesary. but i put it in all my vehicals, i figure a little insurance for my mind is worth it

Canuck,

1) Mobil 1 5qt jug Walmart= $26.00
1) ST 9018 Walmart Filter= $5.00
15 minutes in my Garage = free
TOTAL Job Done Rite = $31.00

Yeah, oil changes I've always done myself on all of my cars. Although I did take the HHR in for a free oil change because I had a coupon for one when I bought the car. Had to get it done before the dealer goes out of business and I miss out. I asked about upgrading to Mobil 1, and it still would have cost me $40!!!

I already have a jug and filter, but then I got the coupon, so I'll save it for next time. Cost me $31 like said above, so I'm doing it myself from now on, and I can use synthetic. I know the dealer said they use a synthetic blend now. Don't know what it is, or what happened to Penzoil.

Hey I know the hardest part of doing my own oil change is getting rid of the old oil. Got it done it. So who can tell me if GM pn 88862173 is synthetic or regular?

UncleDannie 05-06-2009 11:08 PM

I can't tell you about the numbers, but my oil life says I'm down to 16%. My car has never been serviced yet, but I think I'll take it in and have the dealership do it the first time, pay the price, but I'll also have a record for my service.

I thought that there was a service schedule that new cars had to have to maintain their warranty?
