Turbo question.

All,

I have been reading the blown turbo posts and had a couple of questions. We just picked up my wifes SS last week, which she wanted a 2LT and I went overboard on buying the SS, and since I have been reading these posts was wondering if there was any way to prevent this issue? Have the dealers said anything to anyone? I was at my dealership, who I trust, and the guys in the shop were raving on how well this engine runs and the like, then I read these posts. My thought was if the dealership checks for any loose parts it may repvent this or is it inherant in the design. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I feel bad for the folks who have problems, but obviously these are a handful of customers compared to the thousands of these that are there out on the road. Of course when you have problems you are going to be on the forums trying to find a resolution to your problems...

I have 36K mi. on my SS now, and have really only minor issues with the vehicle over the 15 mo. I have owned it. Drive it and enjoy it and if you think you have issues, just have them looked at before they become bigger problems.. Have fun with the new ride!

I agree with Carl.......I have 13,000 miles on my SS, it runs strong and has NO problems. I don't forsee any big deal about maintenance or repairs. I recommend the GM Perf. upgrade too, much more fun and better economy too!

Hey, I am one of those with Turbo problems (Another DEAD SS) and I still think you did the right thing buying the SS. I have owned an LS, LT, and now a SS. The SS is a lot more fun. The dealer working on mine has sold many SS models and this is the first turbo problem that they have seen. In my case, the problem would have been solved in a matter of days if the parts had been available. As chevymgr has stated in other posts and to me in a PM, ALL parts are in short supply or on backorder. The unavailability of a part could have happened on an LT as easily as an SS. (p.s. Do tighten all the clamps to be safe)

Thanks guys. Makes sense about the % of people actually having the problem. Will be checking into upgrades, I will get it buy the wife by letting her know the gas mileage will increase. LOL!

Later,

Have nearly 15k miles on mine with Stage 1 + charge piping upgrade, no drivetrain issues here. Runs perfect. Still loving it :)

Don't worry too much about it, its always the people with problems that post new threads :). Not many post a thread saying "car runs great"

You hear about the bad because we all gravitate to the bad. Kinda like hearing a sound in the dash and thinking your wheels are gonna fall off. Some of these guys are having some real issues and my heart goes out to them for having to deal with a new car that sucks. But, for the most part they are isolated incidents and some are easy fix issues. Just tighten you IC charge pipes. I think everyone has now :) just to insure full boosting :)

I have 12500 on mine and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! Runs like a champ.

As turbo issues go the SS is doing very fine. Turbos have always had issues on most cars. It is a added high temp part that can an used to always have issues.

Today they are no more problematic than a AC compressor anymore.

I can remember the Buick T types would puke a turbo ever 36-37K miles. And when was the last time you saw a Monte Carlo Turbo with the turbo inplace? These tubo issues were very common to many turbos in the 70's and early 80's of any make.

If you read the GM Insider's site, there are rave reviews re the LNF, similar IMO to those when the 350 and 4.3 hit the market. It sounds to me that this engine is a winner, including the aspiration.

Internet reporting is similar to headlines and gambling. You seem to get more emphasis on bad news and winning odds. In reality, there's a balance including the reliability of the twin scroll, electronically controlled Borg Warner turbocharger system used in the LNF.

any part can fail on any vehicle, for any reason, at any time.

I wouldn't worry about it or let it bother you.
