Have you seen how they get their scrap in India?

It's dumped on a beach. everything from computers, to rusted tankers. then a small army of people start chewing it up. from the air it looks like ants ripping apart a beetle.

In the Theatrical Design world we use a pretty good amount of mild steel for set construction, and most of what we get is stamped with a made in India. Bugs the crap out of me that we can ship 20' sticks of steel, halfway around the planet, cheaper than it can be made...well... HERE!? WTF!

Well we are in a global economy now for better or worse. When you have set group A workers willing to do work for net to nothing and shipping is cheap it becomes very cheap. It may be more difficult to deal with and at times the quality may waver but it is cheaper.

Everyone complains about Walmart but nearly all that complain still buy there to keep more money in their pockets. Companies are in buisness to make money not employ people. For many to remain in buisness in a world market they have to remain competitive. If not they will fade away.

We could make stuff here again but most people will not work for what they will offer. Unions will complain and strike and buyers will not pay the price. This may not be true in all cases but it is true in most.

I am a buy American guy as much as you can be in these days. But I also understand how things work for better or worse and technology that has helped America has also help bring industry to parts of the world that sleep on dirt floors.

At work today my firm makes a lot of money selling auto parts world wide. Used to be we were just local and then a long distance sale could be California. Today we sell containers of parts to places like Austrailia, South Africa and even China. I see and get phone calls, chats and e mails world wide today and it is amazing how far we have reached globally.

At this point what is done is done but American needs to find ways they can make a impact in new ways on the world. I just worry we have lost the capacity to do things in the past that could make us at risk in a world war like in the past. Just look at how the Japan earthquake effected auto production not just ther but here with the American companies.

Sometimes we take a step forward but still take two steps behind.
