Changing MAF sensor.

I have an 08 HHR SS. I've had issues with hesitation when accelerating at all speeds, and also engine dying at a low rate of speed. I took it to the shop and they ended up changing my boost sensor. I get the car back and not even 10 miles down the road my check engine light is on again. I got the codes pulled before I even took it to the shop and it was P2178 which is a failed MAF sensor. Well the shop changed the boost sensor saying that would fix it. Now here I am with the same issues and the same code coming up. If it is just the MAF sensor I will just change it myself. Is there any tips or tricks I need to know if I change it myself? They make these new cars pretty tricky to fix yourself but all the research I've done it looks like a fairly simple sensor to change. Is there a way to clean it, or check it before I go and buy a new one to know for sure if that's what is is?

It's pretty easy to do. If you've got the factory airbox it's located right there. I would recommend trying to clean it first. DO NOT just clean it with anything. They make MAF cleaner and it does the job without ruining your delicate sensor. Most shops change sensors without actually knowing their purpose, I have seen this on too many occasions.

My 2 cents,
Danby

Welcome to the site. I agree with Danby, clean it first before replacing. The MAF sensors are common for getting dirty.

Do you by chance have an oiled K&N or other oiled air filter?

Not correct. There is not a code that specifies that it is a failed MAF. It means the MAF has detected a failed reading.
P2178 reads--Fuel trim system rich at cruise or accel.

I would 1st try the MAF cleaning as others above suggested. You can also do a Search here for P2178. I saw several threads for this code and some fixes.

X2 what FMG said! Also clean any oil residue out of the air pipes to the MAF and throttle body!
