Clutch smell

This is my first post (actually technically my second as I just replied to the transmission noises thread). I am the recent proud owner of a 5 speed black SS, probably the only one in Newfoundland, Canada. My satisfaction rating with this vehicle is about 80% but one issue concerns me. I'm getting a burning clutch smell on occasion. It has happened 2-3 times when revving the engine and slowly releasing the clutch when backing up an incline. Any remedy for this and can 1 or 2 severe occasions permanently damage the clutch? Thanks!

If you slip the clutch excessively, this is normal. To prevent this, don't slip the clutch; get on and then off quickly. A few instances of minor clutch slip won't hurt the clutch. Now, if you do this on a regular basis you will shorten clutch disc life and potentially warp the flywheel.

They tend to be a little smelly when they're breaking in anyway. You didn't damage it but the more kind you are to it the longer it will last (obviously).

Absolutely correct, called "riding"" the clutch. When the clutch isn't FULLY engaged or released for any period, the turning fly wheel (from the engine reving) rubs (slips) against it causing the burning and the resulting smell.

Congratulations on your purchase BTW. What colour is it?

Thanks for the replies. Seems like I should refine my driving techniques, especially when backing up on hills. A heavier duty clutch, however, would have been nice from GM.

yeah dont do that to often because you will glaze the clutch and will need to replace cuase it will slip after that

Don't rev the engine. only need to give it slight gas and let out the clutch completely

No wild smokey burnouts in reverse? That's what my wife tells me happened to her when she tried to learn how to drive a stick when she was younger.
