Cooling Fan Running After Turning Car Off?

I have a 2008 SS with 90k miles. I drove it for a while today in sunny, 87 degree weather. Temp on dash was normal and I even scrolled thru gauges one time like always. Temp of coolant was 205 which is what mine always has run. When I got home, I put her in the garage and turned her off. I got out to do a couple of things in the garage and heard a fan running. I walked around to see what it was. It was the cooling fan on the HHR. It stayed on for about 2-3 minutes I would say before it cut off. Is that normal? I didn't remember hearing it do that before but just about every other time, I just go straight in the house.

So, is that normal? Do any of your HHR SSs do that too?

Yes, normal. Donbrew(I think?) has posted the parameters before, can't recall what they are.

X2. Normal but I'll bet that it was over 205 when you turned it off. Like RJ, I can't remember the parameters for the temp to allow the fan to continue to run after shutdown. (something like 216 comes to mind but I could be wrong on that.
My fan has never run after shutdown but my operating temps are always around 187-189. Sometimes a little more if I let it idle a long time before shutdown.

Yeah it did idle for a good bit when I first got home so we could move some cars around and put the HHR in the back of the garage. Then it was a slow crawl into the garage to park it. So I didn't look at the coolant temp at shutdown but I would say it could well have been over 205. Next time though, I will look at it upon shutdown.

The magic number is 284F! You have a problem.

Mine runs after shutdown, rarely. I've never been over 220 or so. There were other parameters, wish I could remember.

There is another place where it seems to say 230F. The entire section seems to have been copied from a different car though, lots of discrepancies.

Welcome to the site, a 2008 , have you ever changed the Dexcool, changed the thermostat?
if so , which thermostat did you use?
it might be time to drain the coolant.
Someone , changed to a better radiator.
Age of the coolant is key, after it gets overheated , it crystallizes

I've shut mine off when hot and never heard the fan run with the key out of the ignition switch.
