Did they ever??
Does anyone make an old school "SS" emblem for the grill?
Or maybe a bowtie with the "SS" on it?
I've seen a black bowtie that says Chevrolet on it in someone's sig (very retro/very cool) but am a big fan of the '60's SS trim and think it would look great on an HHR.

I have not taken the time to see what one will fit but have considered doing this if I knew which one was the best to cover the old bow tie center and fit the angle of the grill.
Maybe he has one of these
Camaros have been produced in limited numbers for police departments and for SCCA's showroom-stock roadracing classes thru the last few generations. See the following:
1LE option (mostly deleting options for roadracing, but I think most should look like a normal Z/28):
http://ve3eie.ncf.ca/1le_history.html
B4C Police Package (a COPO option which allowed police departments to order them w/o Z/28 badging). I have included a link to the Gen 3 Camaros, but many of us have seen or been pulled over by Gen 4 Camaros used by many state/county police departments in the early 2000s.

Sorry I have not introduced myself yet, but I just got thru the registry problems on this site. I've been lurking around this site to research my HHR SS purchase. Then suddenly my mother passed away, so I have been busy with final arrangments, etc. Hopefully all will return to semi-normalcy w/i a week to 10 days and I will intro myself better.
Until then: In the 1990's I've worked for a Chicagoland Corvette/Chevy restoration shop as a salesman and those unique Chevy products are normally built via the COPO (Central Office Production Organization = fleet orders). Thats how all the Nickey Chevys, ZL1 Camaros and other unique high-horsepower cars built thruout GM's history got around GM's cubic inch policies. COPO has produced many cars/trucks with unique combos of trim/drivetrains that never became regular RPO options.
Hope to get to know you all better in the future, and I will try to jump in when I have some pertinent info.
