GM Transmission fluid

I just came from the Chevy dealer, in an attempt to find some Manual trans fluid part# 88862472. They wanted $31 flipping dollars per qt! Aparently there are no aftermarket equivelants from what I have been reading aside from a few recommendations for Red Line 75W 90 NS. I did find some online for $16 though. Anybody prefer Red Line or others over OE for any specific reason?

Why do you want to change it? Have you looked at the recommendations in your https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gene...owners+manual?

A mans gotta know his limitations, and one of them is the price, I see no need to change the fluid at this time. It's you choice of course!

Yes, I know that it says in the service manual that the tranny fluid is meant to last the life of the vehicle. But, I like to put in fresh fluids on my used cars since I don't know how they were driven by the previous owner. It's a cheap safeguard in my eyes. Just like I will not go off of the oil life meters in cars. If I have reached 7,000 miles and it says I still have 35% life remaining, I do not trust it. I'll stick with my 5k synthetic changes. I ordered some off amazon for $40 for 2 qts.

Which trans do you have? the M86 Getrag calls for DexVI. MU3 calls for GL-4, but IIRC there is a TSB that changed all GL-4 recs to GL-5. Mobil1 LS 75w-90 goes for $10.99/qt at Advance. Check for TSBs on your car.

Amsoil GL-4 is $15.75/qt.

It only takes 2 qts. Not like you're changing the 7 qts. of ATF in an auto. trans.
Even at $31 a qt, that's only $62.
Seems like a small price to pay for the maintenance and peace of mind.

I have heard the red line oil makes shifting feel smoother especially in sub zero temps. As far as longevity, who knows. Which is why I bought the OE fluid. Your part # is correct and you can get it at CED for 22$ a qt.

Manual Transmission Fluid SAE 75W-85 GL/4 88862472

Some dealers will price match, so that's worth a shot too.

I fully agree with your theory to change the fluids on a used car, so yes change it out , I would run it through either a paint strainer or even a paper coffee filter to check for metal particles just to be sure.
As for Redline being smoother shifting I have no data base to check that out. I'm sure some members will have some input to that. In my race cars I always used Royal Purple or Lucas...(sponcership)

I ordered this 88862472 FLUID which is a GL4. It was half the price to buy online. Ill be changing it later today after work along with the oil and filter. And I have the MU3 as it is an SS. The manual obviously recommends GM fluids, but I was looking for input from anybody who had used other products. Thanks for the input guys.

Gm is not a lubricant manufacturer just a repackager. They request gl5 or gl4 for the MU 3 transmission which the SS has. Just wondering what the differences in weight between a 75 W 85 + 75w90. Surely you can use any manufacturer as long as it meets the GL 5 or gl4 definition. I'm going with Amsol or royal purple for this application
