Loud Trans

I have a question to anybody that can help me out.

So the trans in my 08 SS is extremely loud, especially from first to second and second to third gear. Also when im in first gear and press the clutch in it makes a loud clunking noise. Does anybody have the same problem?? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

you say extremely loud but what type of noise?
this 5spd is not in the regular hhr or cobalts, they have a m86 and we have a mu3.This trans has been behind some of the saab vehicles that are turbo charged.

I just finished manual trans hands on class for GM and this was one of the 5spds we took apart. Its a beefy little trans and has triple cone syncros like the t56 in the Z06 vette.

this trans was not designed to be quiet but more for durability.
If you are an old schooler this is like comparing the muncie m-22 rock crusher to a saginaw 4spd.

I mean if i was to explain the noise to you the best way to put it would be just a slight clunking noise when shifting but only up to 3rd. But if i have to have a little noise and have a great tranny than im all for it. Thanks for the feedback

yeah mine clunks as well and this is a normal feature..its more of the shifter than the trans. The 2 levers on the trans itself work with one as a gate to gate lever and the other is actual gear to gear lever so its got alot of moving parts to make shifts and it uses cables from the shifter to the levers.

This car is gettting back to the days of a real "SS" and if you have ever driven a 70 chevelle 454 with a muncie m-22 you would be like damn that trans whines real bad...thats because of the straight cut gears, but man can you power shift and not worry about breaking anything.

Yup, clunk and whine here as well. Doesn't sound right to me, but if everybody's does it, then I guess it's normal...

Boy, after being used to the 5spd in my '07 Mustang GT, I thought this thing was quiet!

If you want clunk, you should drive one of the newer Mustangs. They have a two piece driveshaft, and if you are not completely smooth you will make a really loud embarrassing clunk.

But I love it. Got back in my 'Stang after a week in the HHR SS, and man is our clutch light. I always thought the Mustang's clutch was really light for a muscle car, but the HHR is even lighter. The clutch in my old SRT-4 is actually more effort than the Mustang's!

When I test drove a five-speed, I did notice a little bit of the clunk, and the shifter was very stiff, so I assumed it would work itself in over time.
