I am interested in marking my catalytic converter on my 2010 HHR SS for security reasons. But before I do so I want to be sure I am marking the correct part of the exhaust system. Is it the part that looks like a trapezoid, located approximately under the handbrake area?

 

You want to make a converter but you don't know what it looks like?

The converter(s) are the 2 bulges on the downpipe. The third one is the resonator.
You probably don't need to worry much about thieves stealing a 12 year old cat. They are mostly looking for late mode Prius cats. And yours is not an easy cut and run.

 

These are the catalytic converters under your SS . I’m thinking someone’s going to cut them they aren’t taking them to a reputable place to sell them, so marking them would be a waste of your time.

You may be correct about it not being too much of a deterrent. But I have a can of red high heat paint. I have a dremel etching tool. Next time I'm under the car I'll spent 20 painting and etching my license plate number. If they see that and it causes a hesitation and a thought of "maybe we shouldn't" That hesitation may be enough to stop them.

 

It would be a really skinny guy to get that off without a jack, however some police departments round here use a high temp paint for folks. I suppose it is a color they would look for but I think any bright color might be a discouragement. Problem is they are not showing up at most salvage yards, they are being sold on Facebook or other sites and nowhere locally.

 

As it was stated once already, the cats are 12 years old,
It is next to impossible to get to, much less remove, while the vehicle is sitting on its tires.
It was even stated, "next time I am under my car", so you already know how difficult it is to get to.
AND, there are 2 cats. Getting to the top one almost requires being in the engine compartment.
I can't even get my chest under my LT without a jack or ramps.

 

Mostly they want to steal from cars they already know where the cats are that have enough ground clearance to get to the cats without jacks.
