No coolant temp or fuel pressure
No coolant temp or fuel pressure
Hey guys how ya been? My SS panel is away for the winter so i havent been on here in a while, but ive been starting it regularly and today i went to start it and i let it warm up and noticed after about 15 min of running that my coolant temp hadnt moved and on my RPD the coolant temp was blank as well as my furl pressure. Then i noticed my fan was running. Even 6hours later i came out to check it again as as soon as i start the engine the fan comes on, like the second the engine starts. This has never happened before today. Any thoughts guys? Thanks in advance guys
Check Engine Light on? Was the A/C on? (Fan should start right away if A/C is on - not sure about the SS models - maybe yes???).
On the 2.2 and 2.4's a blank coolant digital display (-- --) usually means the thermostat is stuck open and needs replacing. When it is stuck open it is too slow to warm up, and goes blank (-- --) after a few minutes, but also will kick off a P0128 code (but it can be intermittent). A p0128 also stops the A/C from running on the 2.2 and 2.4's.
Maybe one of the SS owners is familiar with the possibility of a thermostat failure.

Install a new Delco thermostat and see if that corrects the temperature first.
P/N 131-158
Then look into the fuel pressure issue if need be.
Possibly the temperature not reading is somehow affecting the RPD reading for the fuel pressure.
To have both readings drop out at the same time is strange.
Don't try any other thermostat, as member after member here that used an off-brand one had subsequent problems. Stick with the ACDelco 131-158 or the GM P/N 12622410. they aren't cheap anymore, dang it.
Oh, if you want to test it further to confirm the thermostat is the issue:
- If the engine sits overnight, does the digital temperature give a readout, then goes to -- -- after a few minutes, then it is definitely the thermostat as it it taking too long to warm up.
- If you let it warm up, then shut it down for a couple of minutes, you will likely find that the temp often will get displayed again, as it actually warms up quick enough for the computer not to get upset.
You might want to check the fuses as well if not already done - that fuel Pressure one is a mystery to me.
For some reason I think that on the SS, a fan comes on right away - but then I may be totally wrong.
FiremanGeorge (FMG) or other SS owners hopefully will chime with some good info in regards to these issues.

On the SS, the cooling fan doesn't come on when the car is 1st started. It will come on if the AC or Defrost mode is selected. Either of those modes uses the AC compressor, which turns on the cooling fan regardless of temp.
My guess is it may be in Defrost mode.
I would try the battery disconnect (lobotomy). It may have been a low voltage issue that triggered the ---- readings.
Curious. Do you keep a battery tender attached when the car is stored ?

That above makes me think the battery voltage could be low.
