Normal boost ranges
Normal boost ranges
I just turned 20,000 on my 08 SS with an automatic transmission.I read many posts about boost pressure's around 20 or so.
Now I mainly drive on the highway around 80 or so.If I'm pulling away from a stop and watch the gage,I may see 5 psi.If I get on it a little,it may go to 12 or so.Most times when I look,I'm below 0 or minus boot showing vacuum.I dont really run that hard from a stop, and have never owned a turbo,so please excuse my ignorance.
What should the gage read at highway speed of say 80 crusing? What would be normal under hard acceleration? The car seems to run fine.
It is not modified.

The Automatic SS will see around 8-12 under hard acceleration in first and second gear and up to 15 in 3rd or 4th gear. It is limited in first and second gear.
Now this can change with the weather altitude.
Under normal driving 5 PSI is normal and the - negitive number are normal when costing or at idle.
Most of the SS getting 20 PSI are either in the right conditions, Manuel or have a stage kit added.
The boost is computer controled and will vary so to say thier is a normal is difficult to put a number too as it can change so often depedending on the conditions it is in.
*EDIT* Wrote this before these guys replied but they were quicker on the draw!!! :) What they said!
Mine runs the same. No problems here with it, as far as mechanical. Alot of the guys have manuals and have more control on shifting to keep boost levels up in peak areas. I see the same boost levels as you for the most part. At 80 and not accelerating, but just maintaining speed on a level surface I am usually around 0 or under 0 of boost. That is normal. the engine RPMS dictate alot of the boost. So when just cruising there is no boost or under, but hit the gas and Boost away!
The max i have seen is about 17 on a hot summer day, this winter I swear it never gets more than 12. Being a pilot, i know how density altitude affects the air, and i swear this computer adjusts for densities to keep the torque in line. maybe not, but I am also not auto stupid. I have seen differences in boost from summer to fall to winter, and now as the days jump 30 degrees the car is way different in response from day to day.
The speed i see the most boost is from a cruise at 70 to a Wide Open Throttle. I push gas half way to get boost up to about 5-8, then all the way down a second later and the tranny downshifts allowing boost to spike to that 17-12 area. No stage kit here yet, but that will allow alot more boost from what people say.

Mine runs exactly the same. I'd been wondering after reading various people's posts on different threads if everything was as it should be, but I eventually figured out that what we're seeing is what we should be seeing. Can't wait til I add the stage kit to see a lil bit more.
