Squirrelly partly cured with stiffer motor mounts. Called "torque steer".

Yes, the TurboTechRacing front engine mount and STOP transmission mounts helped reduce the torque steer quite a bit.

Their rear sway bar is a nice addition also. They are an approved vendor here on the site. https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/supporting-vendors-25/

Carrier?

Know it doesn't happen often, but my carrier bearing failed on mine at about 80K miles. Had all the symptoms that you're describing. Messed up the axle by the time I got to check that out. As I spent time/money replacing hubs since folks think the carrier never fails. Something to keep in mind since it sounds like you're a bit handy around a car..
