Oil filter choices.
 

I have used the Fram Extra, and the Purolator Pure, and both come out wrinkled and with the glued joint at the ends cracked, as if heat has taken its toll. Has anyone used a filter that looks like it does a better job in the long run? I will use the GM filter next time, unless I find a high quality filter built like the Mobil 1 filter line. I always cut my filters apart on my other cars to check for unusual debris, and I know the M1 is head and shoulders above standard Fram and AC. The UHP AC is well built, but I've not found a listing for the HHRSS.

The filters will do this if, when you install it the seals are dry, make sure to use plenty of oil on install....OR it will do this while trying to take it out and the seals will stick at both ends so when you twist the top the whole filter will twist...theres nothing going on inside that will cause this under operating conditions....out of 4 oil changes between 2 cars ,once has the filter come out straight...but then I push my changes to the max( read: lots of heat cycles and miles)....if you chg oil sooner then the DIC you may have better luck.

I always buy the gm filter or a wix filter both work well. when i install i buy an extra quart and i have a small pie plate i dump a little oil in the pie plate and set the new filter seal down in the plate while i drain the oil out of the car never had one twist yet.

Thats a good point, I hadn't thought about it twisting when installing and tightening the cap. I have seen cheap filters look that way when I cut them apart, so I associated that with this. I will lube the filter up good next time and see.

aren't you in the Fort Wayne area? IF YOU WANT OEM, I know AutoZone has the AC Delco PF 457G for around $4.00. I bought all my local store had for about $3.75. And when I was in the AutoZone on Lima just north of Washington, last year, they had ONE for around the same amount. WalMart has the OEM, but they want about $8.00 for it. Also the Chevy dealer on Jefferson, can't remember the name, gave me GM employee discount with a valid I.D. card (for some reason, I believe you're a GM employee).

Although they're pretty much garbage filters, I used to use Fram when I changed the oil in my older vehicles that used dino oil. I always used a 3k mi interval and now 2 of those vehicles are 24 years old with no ill effects that I can see (87 Silverado and 87 Suzuki Samurai). I have pulled some apart from time to time and they seemed to stay intact, but they only had a 3k mi service life.

Now that synthetic oil is the norm for my newer vehicles and the oil change intervals are further apart (usually double the mileage or more), I have abandoned Fram in favor of OEM (i.e. AC Delco) as a precaution. If I find Wix or Bosch, I go for them as well. The filters are less of a consumable than they used to be in the past. I haven't logged 24 years of use on my modern vehicles to know if there is any issue with cheap filters, so I'd rather not take a chance finding out.

Purolators.....but always take em out and look at them before buying(any of them) as the bases are sometimes crooked(non usa made types)
