Primary Chain Tensioner
Can you change the primary Chain tensioner without having to tear it all back down?
I replaced my chains this past weekend and now i have a Bad oil leak and it looks like it may be coming from the tensioner seal. |
The tensioner has a washer attached to it that should just be tightened down. If it is tight I don't know how oil could get out there the only pressurized oil at that location is at the hole in the side of the tensioner.
You can remove it and put a new one in. If you try to reuse the tensioner you will need to figure out how to reset it. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a803da6140.png |
So it will not jump time if i remove it and replace it?
|
No. But I would try tightening it first. I don't know how it could leak if properly installed.
|
Don't ask me how I know. :breakdanc
Remove the tensioner, reset and reinstall. Torque BEFORE releasing the tensioner. Reminder that this has to be done with the valve cover off so that you can release the tensioner. |
So i got it on a lift at work. Got my flashlight and my mirror and sure enough the tensioner is leaking oil from the bottom of the tensioner. It is tight but still leaks. I ordered an AC Delco. Will install it tomorrow or Thursday. See if the leak stops.

Hmm. Did someone forget to put the gasket on the tensioner ?

Tune in , same Bat time, same Bat channel!!!
|
Nope. The seal was on the tensioner. I ordered a GM tensioner installed it today and leak is gone... Hmmm
|
Maybe the other one was installed in the released position? That might throw the torque value off from the tension.
