Rear Tailgate Spoiler
I just got my HHR SS and wanted to remove the rear tailgate spoiler before the paint is completely set up.
Has anyone added this type spoiler to their HHR that would know how they are attached ? There are 2 bolts that appear to hold the spoiler to the tailgate, but after removing the retaining nuts, the spoiler is still firmly attached. I can't see anything else that could be holding it on, unless it is glued on. Before I get flamed for violating a "227 - Defacing an SS", the reasons that I want to remove the spoiler are as follows: * I personally think that this spoiler detracts from the smooth lines of the HHR overall. * I don't believe that the spoiler is functional, i. e. keeping the tailgate clean, and I will not be operating at such speeds that it might serve an aerodynamic function. * The spoiler allows water and dirt to get between itself and the tailgate, which will serve as a PITA with these leaching down the tailgate glass, etc. |
You take it off, I put it on :D I think it flows nicely with the roofline. Don't fret, it's just personal opinion and what you think looks best. It is held on by 2 bolts and lots of 3M tape. Once you get it off you should be able to find a buyer for it in the classifieds:

The tape will be strong...
but eventually can be pulled off.. then the clean up of the residue... good luck.. |
Good luck. If it's the same tape that hold the bowtie on, it will put up a good fight. :guns:

Thanks for the replies.
I tried heating it with a hair dryer; that usually does the trick with 3M tape, but it is still holding on. How many strips of tape are there, and where are they placed ? |

By the way,the paint has been set up for a long time. Take your time taking of your spoiler and it will be fine. You can try using fishing line and wd-40 to slice thru the tape and remove any residue.

There are also 3 plastic locking studs that are mounted to the spoiler. They snap into pre-drilled holes in the lift gate.
