Should the SS have a hood insinulator
Should the SS have a hood insinulator
Just bought a 2010 SS. Does anyone know why the SS does not have a under the hood insulator package? Does the insulator hold heat which would affect the turbo engine? Dealer says that he does not know. Do any SS's out there have the insulator on their car? Thanks for your imput.
No they don't come with one. There was a lot of discussion on this when I bought mine back in 08. The general concensus was that it was left out for having that "tuner" sound from the engine more noticeable.
It also was mentioned it could save weight, but I think it may have been to let the heat from the turbo escape better also.

I bought my SS preowned from a dealership with 6700 miles on it. The car had a hood insulator installed, perhaps from the previous owner (I understand that the party owned a dealer). I crafted the SS logo, but if you look closely, the insulator is embossed with the stock air cleaner shape (kind of like a sideways teardrop).
To date, my temp runs an avg of about 190F and I have no clearance problems, so I attribute it to the concave recess for the stock air cleaner. Only speculation on my part, but maybe GM didn't want to make a square recess for the LNF airbox, so eliminated the insulator for the SS entirely. The Cobalt SS uses them.

If I remember right only 08 build models on the HHR SS had hood insulators, GM stopped using them because of the under hood temperatures. I thought about buying one and painting the SS on there just to use for car shows
