SS running hot from cold start

My 09 SS will sometimes get up over 235 F when I start driving in the morning. If I cut the heat on the temp goes right back down and never comes back up. But if I then park the car at work, when I come back out in the afternoon it will run hot again until I turn the heat on. If the truck is warm it doesnt have this issue. Any idea what would cause that? Thermostat maybe?

I'm wondering if you might have air in the cooling system. Might pay to get the dealer to check it out.

That's what I was wondering. Mine doesn't have a warranty, it was a wrecked SS I saved from going salvage. I'll take it to my oil change guys tomorrow to check for air. I bet that's it though.

Not to get of subject but do you have pics of your progress making it driveable again?

Oh it's on the road and looking like new. Only thing I'm missing are the SS rims. I have the 17"s off of a LS right now. I want to find some black rims with red incorporated in them somehow. I'll try to load up some pics this weekend, I have to rinse the pollen off first.

It might have been an LT. I really don't know to be honest. I'll post a pic and I'm sure someone will know.

Also, back to the running hot issue. It got up to 240 on my yesterday and I had the heat on and it started blowing cold air. Took it to the shop they put about half a gallon of Dexcool in the expansion tank. When the body shop guy I use put the new radiator in he filled it up and the expansion tank but he couldn't crank the truck until the mechanic finished with it. I'm willing to bet he never checked to see if it was full after he had it running.

any time your heater blows cool air you should shut that puppy down, because its out of water and unless your temp sending unit is low in your block you could be getting a inaccurate temp reading and it could actually be much higher. the first time you refill a raditor and block it can be a bugger to get full.
