ss trailer hitch
ss trailer hitch
i am looking at buying a ss but have been told that you cant put a trailer hitch on it.i own a motorcycle shop and have to pick bikes up at times.are there any options?i just totaled my ssr and need more room anyhow.thanks.sonny
etrailer
i just installed 1 i got off fleabay from a place called etrailer..there are many other places to get them..mine is hidden hitch brand name , it weighs about 55 pounds , i think it was very well made , overkill on the thicknes of the steel , but that's better than it not being thick enough..it also came with the part the ball connects to , and a little trick wire that works well for pulling the bolts thru the frame..i have non ss , but the instructions say it fits the ss if you trim a small bit off bumper cover....i think they should have done a better job packing and wrapping it for shipping before the oops delivery got it..the oops delivery or somebody , gave the package enough rough treatment that some of the paint was completely chipped off down to the metal...there was holes in the package where the hitch poked thru..it may have not chipped if it had been packed/wraped better....hitch is rated for 2000lbs.
The Class I hitch can be fitted to the HHR SS, but as stated, the facia must be trimmed. The hitch on an SS is basically used for bicycle racks or luggage platforms. The SS is not designed to tow a trailer whatsoever.
In my owner's manual (2008 model year) it states on Pp 4-35:

SS Package
If your vehicle has the SS package, it is neither designed nor intended to tow a trailer.
If you do tow, just be sure that you keep it under wraps should you act on your warrantee for any reason.

Facia is flexible.. trimming is owners choice, not necessary.. and maybe somebody should define the diff between max gross veh wt and trailer pull wt....pulling a trailer on flat ground should be no diff then say a fully loaded vehicle going up a steep grade...the car isn't actually "carrying" the weight of the trailer.Ive plled my bike all around with no problems whatsoever ( #200 trailer and #780 bike...maybe #100 tounge wt.)
I think the main reason they say not recommended is bcause most people don't know how to drive a turbo(general public)without a load.............called liability
Funny..its the same car as the coblat and the HHR LS/LT and they can tow..only difference is the "UPGRADED" suspension and a more powerful engine...or has this fact been overlooked? And lets not forget all wheel disc brakes..

instructions
the instructions that came with my "hidden hitch" brand name states....do not exceed lower of towing vehicle manufacturer's rating or 2000 lb max gross trailer weight , 200 lb max tongue weight......that is kinda messed up about how it voids ss warantee....it's only 4 bolts to remove if you have warantee issue
......i found the most important thing when towing is always make sure i have plenty of stopping distance....i never had any other problems , but i know that having to much weight on a trailer can cause loss of control , transmission , brakes , suspension problems.
